Interview with Prolific Vector Artist Orlando “Mexifunk” Arocena

Published

Orlando Arocena aka “Mexifunk” is one of the most sought-after digital artists in the world. It’s more than likely that the packaging on one of your Blu-ray/4k discs, action figures, or some of the posters from your favorite films are one of his pieces. His art style is unmistakable, as well as incomparable. From working in an entry level position with DC Comics to having his own art on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Orlando is a prime example of what happens when you mix hustling with a bit of fate. See my exclusive interview with the man himself below.

“In life you have to make certain decisions. You have to pace yourself, and if you make a mistake you have to be able to make it work to your favor or you have to accept it and turn the page and start fresh.” – Orlando Arocena

“Sometimes things come very, very easy and you got these fast lanes to go there. You know I get really worried about fast lanes because if there isn’t any really big learning curve…then it’s coming off too, too, too easy. I want some struggle, some mistakes, some mishaps, some failure, some learning. Thats a really great process for life and for business.” – Orlando Arocena

That Guy Tommy sat down with prolific Kaiju artist Matt Frank during the “Retro City” King of the Monsters-Fest. Since 2011, Matt Frank has been known in both Japan and America as the “Kaiju King,” becoming the fan-favorite artist for all things giant and monstrous!

Although he had been drawing since he was very young, Matt became a true professional artist somewhere between 2005 and 2008. His first official foray into the Godzilla franchise was as a cover artist for Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters for IDW Publishing, and he continued to make covers for Godzilla: History’s Greatest Monster in 2012. By 2013, he headlined the 25-issue series, Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, the longest running Godzilla comic ever published, as a story co-developer, cover artist, and lead interior artist, and the series became an instant classic among fans.

Though Godzilla will always be his first love, Matt is also an accomplished Transformers artist, beginning with The Beast Wars Sourcebook as a character illustrator, and also providing interiors for Transformers Animated: The Rise of Safeguard, Transformers Spotlight: Trailcutter, Mars Attacks the Transformers, and numerous titles for both IDW and Fun Publications. Matt even created 4 new Transformers characters, the Raptoricons, for the Official Transformers Collector’s Club in 2016.
