Interview with ‘Big Easy Queens’ Director Erynn Dalton and Lead Eric Swanson

Published

on

A campy horror, mob drama musical featuring the one and only Miss Bouvèé? Count me in. I was lucky enough to sit down with BIG EASY QUEENS director Erynn Dalton and the multi-talented Eric Swanson to discuss how the project came about and how challenging it is to create a film that brings together so many different genres.

Synopsis: After Mob Queen of the Quarter Minnie Bouvèé has arch-nemesis Poodles Makenzie’s crew brutally slaughtered, she braces for the blowback; what she doesn’t expect, however, is to be stalked by a creepy masked figure who leaves behind bouquets of gardenias and terrifying notes. Is this Poodles’ revenge, or the work of Minnie’s estranged sister who stole her man years ago and has suddenly reappeared in her life?

ERYNN DALTON BIO

Erynn Dalton is a seasoned director for stage and screen who founded Infinite Abyss Productions in Miami, Florida in 2010 where she produced and directed live mixed media original horror productions at her theater. Over the years, Dalton has built a loyal cult following for her grisly live productions, with Infinite Abyss being dubbed by critics and audience as the “modern Grand Guignol”. After directing dozens of live productions, numerous short films and producing two feature films, Dalton made her feature film directorial debut in 2019 with the gothic horror-drama The Gravedigger. The film had its world premiere at Popcorn Frights Film Festival, which was met with critical acclaim and resulted in Dalton and the film being featured in The LA Times, NPR and Sun-Sentinel, as well as genre publications such as Fangoria, Rue Morgue and Bloody Disgusting. The Gravedigger subsequently secured worldwide distribution with Indican Pictures and was released to multiple streaming platforms worldwide October 2022. Dalton directed the outrageously original drag queen “glam horror” feature film Big Easy Queens in Florida with the support of the entire Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale community (communities with a high LGBTQIA population).

MISS BOUVÈÉ BIO

Miss Bouvèé is the drag persona of long-time theatre veteran Eric Swanson (seen in regional professional productions of La Cage Aux Folles, Hairspray, Hair, Simply Gershwin). A New Orleans-born queen, Miss Bouvèé is now a South Florida based full time entertainer where she has produced sold out shows like her annual murder mysteries “Minnie Behind Bars” and “Minnie’s Merry Murder Christmas”. She tours the high seas and US with dear friend and cabaret darling Jennifer McClain as the Boozy Belters (Fire Island, Princess Cruises, Celebrity, Amadeus, and Adventure Bears). They also enjoyed a successful run of their theatrical book show “Double Trouble” in Feb 2022! Miss Bouvèé entertains as a live singing female impersonator routinely performing in South Florida in cities like Fort Lauderdale, Naples, and Key West.

Hitting theaters this weekend across the US is the suspenseful thriller, Dancing Village: The Curse Begins. The Indonesian horror film is a prequel to KKN DI DESA PENARI, which was the highest grossing Indonesian film in history when it was released in 2022. This new film is the first film made for IMAX movie ever produced in Southeast Asia and in 2024, it will be one of only five films made for IMAX productions worldwide. Producer Manoj Punjabi is Indonesia’s most successful film and TV producer, and is the founder of MD Pictures, the country’s largest film company. Punjabi has produced 168 movies, including five of the biggest all-time local box office hits in Indonesia, including SEWU DINO and KKN DI DESA PENARI.

Hear my conversation with director of the movie Kimo Stamboel who had a lot of pressure on him due to the success of the first film and some of the other challenges he faced which includes, working with over 300 live snakes.

SYNOPSIS: In this horror-thriller, a shaman instructs Mila to return a mystical bracelet, the Kawaturih, to the “Dancing Village,” a remote site on the easternmost tip of Java Island. Joined by her cousin, Yuda, and his friends Jito and Arya, Mila arrives on the island only to discover that the village elder has passed away, and that the new guardian, Mbah Buyut, isn’t present. Various strange and eerie events occur while awaiting Mbah Buyut’s return, including Mila being visited by Badarawuhi, a mysterious, mythical being who rules the village. When she decides to return the Kawaturih without the help of Mgah Buyut, Mila threatens the village’s safety, and she must join a ritual to select the new “Dawuh,” a cursed soul forced to dance for the rest of her life.
