‘Shelby Oaks’ – A Mostly Non-Spoiler Review

Published

on

As soon as I saw the name of the director for this film for FANTASTIC FEST 2025 I knew I had to check it out! Chris Stuckman the popular youtube film critic made a film backed by acclaimed NEON and executive produced by MIKE FLANAGAN!

I did not watch any trailers, hell I didn’t even see the poster above so I went in pure and untainted for what I was about to see!

The movie starts off with some fantastic found footage scenes that were very polished that avoid the shaky cam factor that annoys and dizzy’s audiences. A very nice level of intrigue is established for you to wonder what the reasoning of all the madness that we see.

Then the unique, creative, maybe never before executed happens for a horror film and an audible gasp/whoa for the audience can be heard. I call it the Wizard of Oz moment, when you go from black and white to color so to speak (wink). This film does something similar and when you see the film you will know exactly what I am talking about! Its jarring but in a totally great way on the BIG screen.

The two main actor performances are very very good. Sarah Durn as Riley is very very good and Camille Sullivan as Mia just carries the film and really knocks it out of the park. Wonder why she hasnt been in more stuff/bigger roles? Keith David has a nice quick cameo scene that is believable, effective, and felt necessary. The acting from everyone all around was top notch.

Shoutout to the creepy lady in the woods!

The locations really worked for this type of film. You had the creepy woods, a prison, an abandoned amusement park, and of coarse the creepiest of all locations, a home.

Cinematography and score really served the film well, no complaints. Without spoiling what you see other than the picture above and existing marketing material the hounds really worked for me plus the entity you do see almost acting as a commonly seen figure with the entities positioning on camera/off camera gave it a sense of yea this is a NEON film/current horror troupe which works for the film.

As far as negatives go I would say it’s quick to guess what happens next in most scenes and didn’t live up to the creativity level I would expect from someone that spent years and years reviewing film. I do have to say the more I think about the film the more I like it. It did feel walking out of the theater it could of used a couple more ingredients to put it into a higher level. I would recommend this film however if you are in the mood to see a film for spooky season/going on a date. SHELBY OAKS is a solid choice.

DEEP IN THE HEART 2: TEXAS RIVERS Prepare to be captivated by stunning cinematography and adorable wildlife, while gaining a profound respect for nature—a gift that is as unforgiving as it is beautiful.

Culminating after months of dedicated field filming, Ben Masters created this cinematic documentary representing the Texas major river basins and the importance of the vibrant wildlife thriving along the riverbanks. It is a journey that flows the pristine headwaters and threatened estuaries, revealing how they face an unprecedented balancing act.

Masters teamed up with Cinematographer Austin Alvarado and a visionary filmmaking team. The stunning footage captures a Texas landscape raw with survival and rich with life, where apex predators claim their territories, fight to endure, alongside unexpected moments of play and peaceful coexistence. Incredible footage reveals Texas weather at its worst, charting the devastation of its most severe tornadoes, hurricanes, and floods.

Texas native Ethan Hawke narrates the story of the diverse wildlife that calls these meandering riverbanks home, and the incredible influence of weather on the lands of the Lone Star State. His calm, reassuring voice mirrors the gentle pace of the river, creating a powerful contrast when he speaks with deep empathy about the devastation left by hurricanes and recent floods.

Credit belongs to the sound department at Stuck On On for crafting the film’s immersive audio experience. Their work beautifully highlights the intricate auditory scenery of Texas waterways, meticulously capturing the sounds of both terrestrial wildlife and delicate underwater ecosystems. Additionally, thanks to a stellar collaboration between composer and musicians. The Dallas Chamber Symphony recorded the original score by composer Noah Sorota, bringing an authentic Texas musical touch to the documentary. Sorota beautifully blends classical elegance with grassroots soul, evoking the vast spirit of the Texas wilderness and driving the film’s emotional narrative.

Deep in the Heart series is driven by a mission to unite Texans in safeguarding our remaining natural resources, wild landscapes and the wildlife that depends on them. To learn more about Texas land, water & wildlife conservation, you can visit their website:  https://deepintheheartwildlife.com/

ONE NIGHT ONLY Hysterically Sexy and Romantic

Published

on

Directed by Will Gluck
Written by Travis Braun
Starring: Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Maya Hawke, Molly Ringwald, LeVar Burton

Synopsis: In a dystopian time when sexual contact is forbidden for single people but only allowed for married couples. However, singles are granted one day out of the year to gorge in sexual activities.

Will Gluck, known for his notable rom-com films Easy A and Friends with Benefits, concocted a new comedy satire using the recent mandate of no contact due to a worldwide spread virus as the basis of One Night Only. Gluck pairs endless humor about managing sexual tension during a ban on sexual intercourse for single people, and how they are faced with the challenges of building a monogamous long-term relationship.

Callum Turner applied his sexy humor and romantic attributes to his performance. Even though his accent was a bit muddled, credit is given for learning how to make a traditional New York pizza, while Monica Barbaro dazzled in her dress with her vocal skills to the 80s/90s music parody throwbacks.

The film expands its audience through epic blasts from the past cameos with New York City’s vibrant energy that serves as the perfect backdrop. The on-screen chemistry between Turner and Monica Barbaro was leveled, prioritizing the laughs over character progression.
Expect witty and flirtatious characters that blend in a deeply romantic heart. One Night Only is a lively movie that guarantees laughter for those looking for a fun night out with friends. Don’t forget the pizza!

THE ODYSSEY – Tragedy of Choppy Continuity

Published

on

Written/Directed by Christopher Nolan
Cast: Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya Charlize Theron, Samantha Morton, Jon Bernthal
Synopsis: Following the Trojan War, Odysseus, the legendary Greek king of Ithaca, recounts his grievous quest encountering mythical beings – the Cyclops, Polyphemus, Sirens and the nymph Calypso – while attempting to reunite with his wife, Penelope.

Christopher Nolan, known for winning two Academy Awards (Best Director and Best Picture) for Oppenheimer (2023) among his other popular works, Interstellar (2014) and The Dark Knight Trilogy, took the risk of filming his new movie The Odyssey in IMAX format. What might have been a good idea in the early stages of the process, this approach has its detriments that affected his creative outcome. Due to the limited filming material, each scene is captured in 2-3 minute increments. This method of cinematography did not allow for the actors to breathe and unfold their characters – making the movie a patchwork collection of disjointed scenes.

There are many diversions from the narrative by placing focus on the majestic, beautiful scenery, Greek structures and the Trojan horse that is in a nontraditional pose from being on all fours. Between Matt Damon’s narration and the dialogue-free scenes, it felt like watching a National Geographic documentary—filled with sweeping views of rugged waves upon the sea, rocky hills, and rich historical backdrops.

The all-star ensemble, many who have worked on Nolan’s previous box office hits, appeared uncomfortable and rushed to regurgitate their lines rather than inhabiting their roles. This could be the result from the filmmaking style approach – not allowing space for character expansion and falling short of expectations.

Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland carried brief solid performances, though their appearance ultimately was less of a memorable impact. However, from the entire cast, there are only two standouts which came from Samantha Morton and Robert Pattinson, both of whom fully understood their roles and delivered exceptionally well. They elevated the material despite the constraining production design.

The peak of this lengthy film arrives in the final last moments—a masterclass in pure, dialogue-free action. Is it worth the 3 hour wait for an explosive finale? No, not really. The Odyssey is the Cliff Notes version of the legendary Greek tale. The production lacked narrative depth, resulting in an incomplete experience.
