ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE CINEMA SET TO RETURN TO DALLAS-FORT WORTH AND TWIN CITIES THIS SUMMER
Alamo Drafthouse announces acquisition and reopening of six formerly shuttered franchise locations, including DFW’s Lake Highlands, Richardson, Cedars, Las Colinas and Denton locations and Minnesota’s Woodbury location.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is excited to announce that it will be reopening its doors in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Twin Cities markets this summer. All six locations that recently closed as part of the franchisee’s Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing will now be owned and operated by Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, and are set to reopen in rapid succession, including DFW’s Cedars, Denton, Lake Highlands, Las Colinas, and Richardson locations and the Woodbury location in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. Additionally, Alamo Drafthouse is pleased to share that all affected venue staff will be made whole for lost wages that they were owed prior to the closures. The news comes amidst a surging box office this summer with movies that have been a major success at Alamo Drafthouse like BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE, THE BIKERIDERS, and INSIDE OUT 2.
“We were heartbroken to hear about the franchisee’s decision to close their locations in Dallas-Fort Worth and Woodbury, MN, but we immediately got to work to acquire these as Alamo Drafthouse owned locations,” said Alamo Drafthouse CEO Michael Kustermann. “We’re so excited to reestablish Alamo Drafthouse Cinema for our teammates and local film communities in these great cities during an incredibly successful summer of moviegoing.”

Alamo Drafthouse is committed to supporting former DFW and Twin Cities teammates who were adversely affected during the franchisee’s closings by offering past teammates first access to interviews for open positions. Those who are rehired will receive a more robust benefits plan with immediate eligibility, including access to daily pay, substantial 401k match, paid medical leave, accrued PTO, free mental health services.
Alamo Drafthouse will host a soft opening during the first week of each location’s reopening with promotions and discounts to be announced. Additionally, individuals owed ticket refunds due to the sudden closings by the previous owners will receive free ticket vouchers, and guests who previously purchased Alamo Drafthouse’s INSIDE OUT 2 lunch box and DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE pint glass will receive these items upon reopening. Finally, members of Alamo Drafthouse’s Season Pass subscription service will enjoy a free month of service when their accounts are reactivated.
Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema recently announced that SPE had acquired Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, the unique and fastest growing theatrical exhibitor. The company is managed within SPE under a newly established division, Sony Pictures Experiences, headed by Alamo Drafthouse’s CEO Michael Kustermann under the leadership of Ravi Ahuja, President and COO of SPE. Alamo Drafthouse continues to operate all 41 of its cinemas across 25 metro areas under the Alamo Drafthouse brand. Alamo Drafthouse-owned Fantastic Fest, the world-renowned genre film festival, was included in the acquisition and also continues to be operated by Alamo Drafthouse.

Dreambreaker: A Pickleball Story – Review
This documentary film shines light on the sport of pickleball and the competition against leagues to cash in on the now popular sport. Two wealthy Texas entrepreneurs form rivals in professional pickleball leagues and feud over obtaining contracts on the world’s top players.

Austin billionaire Steve Kuhn, a hedge fund manager turned philanthropist, and sports mogul built Dreamland, an outdoor entertainment and arts venue in Dripping Springs, Texas located in the Hill Country. The site features 16 dedicated pickleball courses, miniature golf courses, and one state of the art music stage.
In 2021, Kuhn co-founded Major League Pickleball (MLP) and held tournaments in Dreamland. I was surprised to learn how this sport evolved into a franchise and attracted investors like Milwaukee Bucks owner Marc Lasry, and elite athletes like LeBron James, Patrick Mahomes, and even Drew Brees.

Like in all investments and in sports there is always a competitor – here is where Connor Pardoe steps onto the court. Pardoe formed the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) back in 2018, which required the players to sign a one year exclusive contract and transformed the industry from a recreational activity to a burgeoning sports powerhouse. The PPA then gets a new player, investor Thomas Dundon a chairman and managing partner of Dundon Capital Partners in Dallas, Texas. Dundon extended the exclusivity contracts to 3 years.
This sporty film has the tournament founders going head to head, evolving the sport into social media influencers, and chasing the gold. It also stars John McEnroe, no stranger to sport action drama.

Pickleball fanatics and those curious about the sport will find this documentary interesting, maybe even have more people interested in participating in playing pickleball or as a spectator.
The documentary is produced and directed by Ashley Underwood and written and produced by Craig Coyne is set to premiere Friday, April 11 on truTV and also will be streaming afterwards on the Max platform.
